As I predicted, not everyone agrees with me about P'Allen Stinnett's P'henomenal P'erformance on P'hriday, er, Friday.
From Sunday's Omaha World-Herald:
Stinnett's effort should only heighten the buzz generated when he committed to Creighton a year ago. Originally headed for Iowa State, he received a release when the Cyclones changed coaches in the spring of 2006.
That led him to Brewster Academy, the New Hampshire prep school where teammate Chad Millard also played. Stinnett averaged 14 points per game last season for a team that finished fifth nationally among prep schools.
Stinnett brought to Creighton a reputation of being an explosive, athletic player. What has been surprising thus far is his shooting touch. He made 2 of 3 3-pointers and scored 11 in the Nov. 1 exhibition win over EA Sports, then was 5 of 7 from behind the arc against DePaul.
That article from the Sunday World-Herald certainly tries its damnedest to paint P'Allen as the next Bluejay superstar, and its publication on their widest-circulated day certainly will go a long way toward painting that picture in the minds of the public at large.
And then on Monday, Stinnett was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week.
Creighton men's basketball guard P'Allen Stinnett has been named this week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week. A true freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., this is Stinnett's first career honor.
Just to be completely clear, I never said he didn't have one helluva game, and it was absolutely a remarkable performance magnified both by the fact that it was his first game EVER and that his scoring barrage led the team to a come-from-behind win. I just said Chad Millard hit shots in the first half to keep the game close so P'Allen could do his Superman thing in the second half. He's gonna be a star, folks, don't worry. But as longtime readers of this site know, I rarely give the POTG award to the obvious candidate. What's the fun in that?
You bet.
