From the official press release:
OMAHA, NEB - Isaac Miles has asked for and been granted his release to transfer out of the Creighton men's basketball program.
The Kansas City, Missouri native recently completed his freshman season at Creighton, where he averaged 6.1 points per game last season.
Rumors of Miles' departure -- either of his own accord or of a more, ahem, unceremonious nature -- have been swirling for a few weeks now, and certainly with this curt two sentence presser CU has made it official.
The rumors that may or may not explain the back story of this development are just that, rumors, and I won't give them credence by laying them out here. Without getting into specifics on those rumors, the general consensus among fans seems to be that after the embarrassment of Terrell Taylor's legal woes came to light, Dana Altman has a much shorter leash than he might have had in years' past with players' transgressions, legal or otherwise.
Because the events that led to this dismissal -- or departure, depending on your viewpoint -- are not of a legal nature, they're not likely to come to light. I'm sure we'll never know the real story -- or at least, not both sides of the story -- and until we do, its best to keep the focus of the story on the court. This is an immense loss in terms of experience and potential, and hurts next years' depth. Miles started over half the team's games and was an integral part of the squad's defensive sets. The recruiting class coming in should relieve most of the statistical loss -- 6.1 ppg and 2 assists -- but he was one of just 2 returning starters on a team that will be flush with talent but green on experience.
If the rumors I've been hearing are true, then this is probably a case of being better off for cutting ties and moving on. You've got to play by the rules and do what the coaches expect of you -- or else you won't be around for very long. And if the rumors are true, this is for the best.
I would be remiss if I didn't give cursory mention to the fact that out of last year's recruiting class, dubbed the best in school history, two of the four players are now gone, a third was injured two games into his freshman campaign and the other has yet to suit up after redshirting. Ouch.
I wish the guy all the best wherever he ends up. Its sad that the lasting memory of his three-consecutive steals against Nevada in the NCAA Tournament will be his "One Shining Moment" as a Jay, but that's how it goes sometimes.
