Holy Crap

I just noticed that a local ticket broker is charging $195.00 A PIECE for tickets to the Creighton/Nebraska game in two weeks...

These seats are 10 ROWS behind mine, in the exact same section. (I'm in 113, Row 4, and these are all the way in row 14).

So, for tickets that with my season tix I paid $9 each for, they're getting $195??

Still, I wouldn't sell mine for that much. Even though its $400 I would never allow a fan of the other team to sit in my seats for that game, at any price. I'm serious.

Jays Win, But I Eat The Worst Hot Dog Ever

Game One: Jays 87, Arkansas Pine-Bluff 55

Saturday, Creighton put the smack down on Arkansas Pine-Bluff, one of the worst teams in the SWAC -- the worst league in Division I. The Jays won 87-55, and it really wasn't that close.

Seriously, when your coach is on the radio in the days leading up to the game saying you need a "miracle" to upset Creighton? That does not bode well for your chances. This actually happened. They replayed that sound byte a couple three times during the 90 minute pregame show on the radio.

And let me comment on that real quick: its about damn time Creighton had a big time radio production. When their games were on an oldies channel, bookended by Sinatra and Bob Goulet tunes, they got 20 minutes before and after the game to talk. Now that they're on Big Sports 590 -- a 5000 watt superstation that, reportedly, can be heard in five states -- they get 90 minutes before and 90 minutes after the game. This kicks ass.

Game Two: Jays 116, Nebraska-Kearney 84

Last year, I opined on the strange phenomenon of fans' fascination with a team scoring 100 points in a college basketball game. It happens pretty rarely, and when it does, generally there's some drama and tension surrounding the getting to it. More often than not, its a blowout, so the team's reserves are the ones attempting to get to 100 in the waning moments.

And then there's last night's game between Creighton and Nebraska-Kearney. The Jays blew past the 100 barrier with almost 6 minutes remaining, and wound up with 116 in their blowout win. I had to go back and consult my trusty Jays record book to find out if they'd ever scored that many before. Since last night was an exhibition game, it doesn't technically count, but apparently the most points they've ever scored in a "real" game was 124 against Miami Florida in February 1964.

Thoughts from Practice

Last night, Creighton held an open practice at the Qwest Center as the team makes final preparations for their first exhibition game this Sunday. Polyfro.com was there, and here's my official (and unofficial) thoughts on what was seen.

-It remains to be seen what uniforms they wear Sunday, but if there gamers look anything like the practice gear, they might actually have decent looking unis for the first time in years. This is great, because the jerseys -- particularly the home jerseys -- they've worn the last 8 years have been various shades of atrocious. Seriously, the black outline around the blue letters? Way too thick, and it makes CREIGHTON almost unreadable. And don't get me started on the gigantic nameplate on the backs. (What, I'm a designer, I wonder about these things).

-The Jays will seemingly be 12 deep. Yes, you read right. They have 12 legitimate players who could, and will, see minutes this year. With that said, we all know the bulk of the minutes will go to Watts, Funk, Mathies, Tolliver, and some combination of point guards. The rest of the minutes will be a fight to earn. This is not a bad thing.

My quick thoughts on everyone who played tonight:

It's Basketball Season Again

(Max sez: This post originally ran on Polyfro.com last November, foo!)

As I almost slipped outside on the ice-covered parking lot this morning, I had only one thought: its college basketball season.

So fittingly, my alma mater opens up the exhibition season tonight as Creighton takes on the EA Sports All Stars down at the Qwest Center. My season tickets arrived in the mail last week, so we'll be there in the fourth row once again cheering on the Bluejays. This is the second year I've officially had season tickets; my first year out of college, one of my old professors had tickets he rarely used and would give me. Those seats were in the old Civic Auditorium up in the third balcony. First row though, so you could put your feet up and relax.

The last year at the Civic, the Jays rose as high as #9 in the polls and tickets were hard to come by. I didn't get to use the professors' tix that year; he went to every game. I bought some single ducats, but that gets pricey quick. For the ESPN Bracket Buster game against Fresno State, tickets were so hard to come by I had to go on eBay and buy from a scalper. I was lucky enough to get free tickets to the final game at the Civic, in which me and my friend Nate sat two rows from the top to witness Kyle Korver's last game in Omaha.

So last year, no longer assured of getting free use of season tickets, I bought my own. And choice seats they were. Lower bowl, 4th row. Right behind the basket, where the rowdies sit. Its awesome. Last count, there were 9200 season ticket holders -- crowds last year routinely were over 11,000. It wasn't always this way.
